What 25 Years in Direct Sales Taught Me That a Business Degree Won’t

If you’ve ever searched for a side hustle that actually feels meaningful, you’ve probably wondered… is this really something I can do, or do I need formal business training to succeed?

Nicole Bowles - Direct Sales

After 25 years in direct sales, I can tell you this with complete honesty ~ the most important lessons I’ve learned about building a business, creating additional income, and becoming the best version of yourself are not things you learn in a classroom.  They’re things you live.

When I first started, I was taught to focus on numbers, set SMART goals, and push sales. And while those strategies have their place, they never truly felt aligned with who I was. I followed them because I thought that’s what being “coachable” meant. But over time, I realized something that completely shifted my business and my confidence.

People do not want to be sold to. They want to be understood.

One of the biggest lessons direct sales teaches you is how to truly connect. This business is not about transactions. It’s about relationships. It’s about listening to someone, understanding what they need, and offering a solution that genuinely helps them feel better, more confident, or more like themselves.

That is something no business degree can teach you.

Another lesson that surprised me is that building a successful side hustle is less about strategy and more about consistency and belief. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You don’t need the perfect plan. What you need is the willingness to show up, to learn as you go, and to trust that your effort will grow into something meaningful over time.

Direct sales also teaches you resilience in a way nothing else can. Not every conversation leads to a sale. Not every post gets engagement. But you learn to keep going. You learn that progress is built in small, consistent actions, not overnight wins.

And then there is something even more powerful.  Community.

One of the most overlooked benefits of direct sales is the opportunity to be surrounded by like minded women who are also building something for themselves. Women who support each other, encourage each other, and remind you that you’re capable of more than you think. That kind of environment is what helps you grow, not just as a business owner, but as a person.

If you’re looking for a way to earn extra income, build something of your own, and create a business that feels aligned with who you are, direct sales is still one of the most powerful paths available today. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s human.

It allows you to take what you already do every day, sharing your favourite products, helping others, connecting with people, and turn it into something that can grow into a real business.

And the best part?

You don’t have to do it alone.

After 25 years, my passion is no longer just about building my own business. It’s about mentoring other women who are ready to step into something more. Women who want flexibility, purpose, and a supportive community as they grow.

Because when you put people first, the business will follow.

And that is something no degree can teach you. 💗
